The Groves Get Revenge!

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Laurie and Darren Grove just returned from Cabo where they crushed the Dorados and filled their freezer and took some of the pressure off of the Mr. Z crew by not having to just catch edible fish.  They come every year and we usually concentrate on edible fish, but when given a chance to go after fish that you are not going to eat, there’s nothing like releasing a billfish…

And that’s exactly what we did!  Laurie fought this Large Sailfish for quite a while before Capt. Steve gently lifted it for a quick pic and then back in the water.  The Groves were nice enough to stop by on their way out of town and drop off an 8X10 of her and the fish for our “Bragging Book.”

Thanks so much for the repeat business!

Gaffcam “Guru” Makes a Quick Stopoff…

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Steve Taylor took time out from his busy schedule to drive down from Key Largo to do some afternoon fishing aboard the Mr. Z this past week.  I didn’t want to tell him they had a couple of charterboats up there, but he said he’d drive the miles to fish with the boys he knows will always put him on fish…  or at least bust their butts trying!

We started out slow, but ended up with Dolphin, Bonitos, Kingfish, and this nice Amberjack we jigged up off the 240 wreck.

Thanks to the “Guru” of Gaffcam, Steve Taylor, see you in the fall!

Hammer Time.

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

When the trolling gets tough, the smart go wreck fishing!  And with the invention of the high-speed vertical jig, any moron can catch a big fish!

We were shining examples of that fact yesterday.  After immediately catching a Blackfin Tuna, we went for several miles having only encountered a few Bonitas.  With just a few drops of the jig on a submarine wreck in 240 feet of water, we landed this nice “Hammerjack” and made the day.

Thanks to Christian Ehrat for fishing his wedding party with us and we wish him best of luck!

Yet Again, More Dolphin in February!

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

Greg Hulett and buddies spent two days fishing aboard the Mr. Z this past week and weren’t disappointed.  The second day was a strange weather day with fog, that we rarely get, that brought Tuna, Bonita, and Jacks over the wrecks.  Lunch presented itself on the first day and we collected quite a few Dolphin in flat calm water in February.  You’d of thought it was June!

 Thanks Greg!

Do You Catch Sharks Trolling?

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Many anglers assume that since we mostly troll for fish that that eliminates the chances of catching a Shark…  Not so!  We catch quite a few Sharks in both the deep water and on the reef.  Sharks are creatures of opportunity.  They sense a fish in distress and are quick to take full advantage of the situation.  In deep water, we occasionally encounter the legendary Mako Shark or a Silky Shark and on the reef, Caribbean Reef Sharks, Black Tips, Sandbar Sharks, and Hammerheads are common.  One minute you are reeling in a 2 pound Yellowtail Snapper and suddenly it gains 100 pounds and you are hooked up to the fight of your life.  Here’s a quick video to show you what it looks like!
