Wahoo and Blackfin Tuna in March

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

The most frequently asked question we get is, “When is the best time to go fishing?”  It’s a tough one to answer without sounding like a smart-aleck, but here goes…  You can catch any fish at any time of year in Key West.  Period.  We just don’t have any real seasons for fish.  The air and water temperature change only a few degrees, the tides from the Gulf of Mexico into the Atlantic Ocean cycle every six hours, and the Gulf Stream runs just a few miles offshore.  It is an ever-changing pallet of possiblilities and anyone that thinks they have it figured out is either naive or lying to you :)

Kim and John Hawkins have fished aboard the Mr. Z repeatedly and have caught just about every species.  They have caught Sailfish, Dolphin, Kingfish, Wahoo, Blackfin Tuna, and numerous reef species and they always come at the same time of year.  They would be the first to tell you that you just never know!

Life is Like a Box of Chocolates…

Sam Peeters from Belgium  fished aboard the Mr. Z Tuesday (as he does every Tuesday in March) and we decided to give Daytime Swordfishing a try…

and ended up with an almost 50-pound Wahoo!

Just like Forrest’s Mother would say, “You never know what you’re gonna get.”

Ya Just Never Know What You’re Gonna Catch…

Charlie Pacquette is one of our regulars that fishes with us many times throughout the year.  He usually sits up top with me on the bridge and we shoot the crap catching up on each others’ lives and kids while Capt. Steve entertains Charlie’s guests.

Angie Canai from Glendale, RI was a first timer aboard the Mr. Z and brought some sort of new luck Charlie had never seen in all his trips out of Key West before.  She caught this 23 lb. Wahoo in 200 feet of water on 30 lb. tackle and a mono leader!  It was the first Wahoo caught on any of Charlie’s trips and combined with the half dozen nice schoolie sized Dorados, the Pacquette clan are eating well tonight!

Thanks again to Charlie for being a loyal customer :)

Kingfish Are Schooling Through…

Nate Boyd, from Geneva, Ohio, and friends spent the day fishing aboard the Mr. Z out of the A and B Marina this past Saturday and put together quite a variety of fish.

Nate caught the biggest Kingfish out of several that we caught right at the mouth of Key West Harbor.  No more than 5 miles out and 5 minutes of lines in the water!
