No Season for Big Dolphin? Bull!

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Mike Berger and buddies spent a couple of days fishing on board both the Mr. Z and the Triple Time this past Biker weekend.  Both vessels are 46.6 Bertrams and dock side by side right downtown at the A and B Marina.  Great location, A/C, bathrooms, skilled crew, and built like tanks they are.  So, if you run into the problem of having more than six passengers, no problem, we just split them up and take two boats and double our chances on the big blue.

I have to admit, the Triple Time came out on top over the two day tournament with releasing two Sailfish, catching 3 Wahoo to 25 pounds and numerous other “entertainment” fish, but the Mr. Z came on strong with several nice Dolphin including this 28 pound Bull that just didn’t want to give up even when whipped right at the boat.  Capt. Steve wasn’t gonna let this bad boy go since he already had the wife and kids resting in the cooler on ice.  The Bull was the last to join them for the free ice celebration!

Thanks Mike!

Catch’n Bait the Old Fashioned Way.

Monday, September 21st, 2009

There are a couple of options when it comes to obtaining live bait for fishing this time of year.  As most of you know, we always have frozen ballyhoo and squid on board, but sometimes it can really make or break the day by having some live Goggle Eyes, Pilchards, Blue Runners, or Pinfish on board.  Of course, they have to be really fresh.  In other words, they need to be caught within the last 12 hours and you might have been enjoying a cold beverage, some wonderful Key West cuisine, or the company of a new friend you met downtown and not had the time to head out the night before your trip just to catch some 5 inch baitfish :)

So, many times I make the executive decision to call up “Dangerous Don” (Not his real name) and make some pre-fishing arrangements to pick up some live bait from him first thing the next morning.  Some days Don and his bait are a Godsend and turn us from zeros to heroes.  Live bait isn’t cheap, but it can make all the difference.  And, the experience had by just dropping by his “store” can really be entertaining!

Here’s a pic from the vault of Dangerous’ Bait Shack…
