The Captains of The Mr. Z ...

About Captain Jay Miller

Captain Jay Miller owns the Mr.Z and the Outer Limits. From the time he could walk, he grew up fishing the coastal waters off southwest Florida in the town of Englewood Beach, where he was born and raised. While fishing the Gulf of Mexico for a variety of species, from live baiting, to trolling, to bottom fishing, to site fishing, he honed his skills for charter and commercial fishing.

Captain Miller has thousands of days on the ocean. Moving to Key West in 2001, Captain Miller worked full time on many different sport fishing boats out of the famed Charterboat Row, learning from as many Captains as he could, as each of them has a different perspective. Captain Miller obtained his 100 ton Coast Guard issued Captains license in 2004. As a Mate/Captain he spent 4 years working with Captain Bennett Taylor, who previously owned and operated the Outer Limits. He spent 2 years as captain of a 28ft. Whitewater where his skills of light tackle fishing were perfected.

Capatin Miller has worked on such boats as the TripleTime, the Linda D, the Patriot, the Snake Oil, the Reel Appeal, the Outer Limits, and countless others. From Flats skiffs, to Offshore center consoles, to 65ft private Sportfishing yachts, he has run them all. This experience has helped Captain Miller become very successful in the charter fishing industry. With a delightful smile and a charismatic personality Captain Miller has many clients that fish over 20 times a year with him.

Captain Steve Liberatore

Born in Fort Pierce, Florida, Captain Steve Liberatore was first introduced to charter fishing at the age of 11 and immediately fell in love with the sport. He admired the charter captains he fished with and dreamed of the day when he could be a captain. In 1995, Captain Steve acquired his Coast Guard 100-ton Captain’s license and began building his first charter boat, “The Big Easy,” out of Port Canaveral, Florida.

In 1998, after determining that Key West was the only place in the United States to be a full-time, everyday charter captain/mate, Captain Steve sold “The Big Easy” (still operating out of Sebastian, Fla.) and moved to the Southernmost City. Steve has worked on some of the top charter boats running out of Key West such as The Miss Gina, The Extreme, The Generation, and since June of 2000, the Mr. Z.

Captain Steve has fished and placed in many tournaments over the years including:

Even after professionally fishing in Puerto Rico, Mexico, The Bahamas, and Cuba, Captain Steve still believes Key West has more to offer. Captain, mate, engineer, but most of all a fisherman, you will usually find Steve working the deck because as he likes to say, “That’s where the action is!"
